Chapter 10

Emily waited a good ten minutes before picking up the phone in her room and puzzling over the instructions for calling the front desk. "Hello," she huffed into the receiver when the host picked up. "It's Emma Marks in room 605. I need that porter back here. The one that looks like an over-ripe tomato. With the ridiculous mustache? Yeah, he put my luggage in the wrong spot and— good. Tell him to hurry up. I don't have all day." She hung up the phone with a bang.

That was satisfying. I guess, that's one way landline phones are better than cell phones: drama!

Turning to face her reflection in the enormous, gilt mirror over the fireplace, she scolded, "You, Emma Marks, are a silly, spoiled brat." She shook her head and crossed to wait by the door for Brent's return. She let him knock once before she jerked the door open.

"Miss Marks," he said.

"Well, hurry up," she said loudly.

He winked, stepping into the room. She closed the door and grinned. "I'm sorry for calling you an over-ripe tomato."

"I take it you're not sorry for saying my mustache is ridiculous?"

She eyed him. "It's pretty bad, Brent. The glasses I like, but the mustache—"

"I like being recognized by Donati or his men even less than this scratchy thing and the uncomfortable glue holding it on."

"You make an excellent point."

Brent pulled the smallest pink suitcase out of the closet and laid it on the marble dining table nearby. Snapping it open, he lifted out a tray of cosmetics and set it aside. Emily leaned closer and peered into the case. Coiled neatly in the bottom was quite a bit of white wire and a package of white reusable adhesive putty. Resting in the middle of the coil was a black controller of some kind, sporting a lot of buttons and an antenna.

"Wow," she said, "that looks... complicated."

"It's not so bad," Brent said. "You want to set it up?"

"Ooo... can I?"

Brent pulled off a pinch of the white tacky stuff and rolled it between his fingers. "You ever use this stuff to hang up posters in your room?"

"Sure. I had a world map I hung up so I could put pins in all the places I wanted to see someday."

He smiled. "Then you're a pro. Use it to attach the wire to the back wall of the coat closet in this pattern—" he passed her a paper with a diagram. "When you're done, the end of the wire plugs into the controller. This button turns it on. If it blinks green, that means ICS tech guys were able to connect to it."

Emily nodded and carrying the supplies to the closet, sliding in past the stack of suitcases to the back of the small area. "What does it do?"

"It uses sound waves to plot the room next door. ICS will get a fuzzy idea of the layout and the positions of any people in there."

They sure are committed to keeping me safe, going so far as to spy on my neighbors.
